In fact, the whole main campaign of the story is rather linear, with limited ability to truly explore. The first five hours are more or less a tutorial, which is rather unfortunate. Unfortunately, it gets off to quite a slow start.
Players then get to choose a partner for the adventure. Players start out by taking the familiar personality quiz that matches up the player up with a starter Pokemon. Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon is an excellent game, one that returns to the basics of the franchise: a challenging, Pokemon-collecting game with loot-based elements. Honestly, I should not have been worried. With that knowledge, I was rather disappointed to receive a code for Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon the day of its release, expecting the game to be a disappointing repeat of the last Pokemon Mystery Dungeon title – Gates to Infinity. After all, Nintendo sent us Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival the day of launch, and that was not a great game by any stretch of the imagination. The music in this is unlocked as you progress through the story and hear the music as standard, but there are tracks from previous Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games which are unlocked when you reach certain ranks.Usually, if a company sends us a game to review very close to launch, or not at all, it is pretty indicative that the game may not be that great. To prevent accidental skipping, you also have the ability to lock the buttons using the Start button. This only works through the headphone port of your 3DS, and it locks out access to the home menu. The interesting feature of this is that you can continue to listen to the music even if your 3DS is in sleep mode.
There are also three backgrounds which show simple animations of Pokémon dancing when you have your 3DS open. These can be put on repeat, shuffled and you can use the 3DS buttons to pause, skip or go back. Here, you can listen to any of the 171 music tracks included within the game.
